Photos: actress Maggie Cheung
The other day I received a great advice from a reader (thank you, Joanie!), she asked me to feature some stylish women in their 40s and 50s. The first style icon jumped into my mind was Maggie Cheung. For those who haven’t heard of her, check out her profile on Vogue Italian (here). Chinese stars are definitely having a moment in global fashion stage now, from supermodel Liu Wen, Shu Pei Qin to actress Fan Bingbing, Gao Yuanyuan, but the celebrity I admire the most is always Maggie Cheung.
She once said that her style icon is Kate Moss, but for me, she is the Eastern “Kate Moss”. This 48-year-old never seems to age! Besides her flawless skin and slender figure, I’m deeply attracted by her personal style. She never takes herself too seriously. Wearing T-shirt sitting in the front row, biking around Paris streets, she always looks effortless chic. Today, I picked two of my favorite looks of her during this year’s fashion week to share some inspirations with readers in their 40s or have moms in their 40s, 50s (like mine).
I usually don’t follow fashion rules. But I do think there are several “rules” for women in their 40s, for instance, conservative hemline (knee-high or below the knee); high-quality clothing; sleek silhouette (no distressed or cropped pieces); clean, sophisticated color palette (neon is a big no no)…
My trick to add youthful vibe to high-quality, sophisticated colored, conservative wardrobe is bringing in one or two youthful pieces, like trendy sunglasses, statement jewelry, of-the-moment shoes, or–like today I featured– printed T-shirts!
A printed T-shirt can instantly add young and fun vibe to your look. I prefer basic white (which will go perfect with most neutrals in your wardrobe while brightening up your skin); whimsical, fun print (but no Gothic or any inappropriate text of course), and basic shape (again, not cropped, distressed design). Keep the rests simple to achieve a sophisticated yet edgy, fun look.
Below I picked five of my favorite printed white tees. I think women in their 20s to 50s can all easily incorporate these pieces in their wardrobe and look equally fabulous! Tell me which one is your favorite and how will you style them!
